What to Watch for at Barber Motorsports Park

  • A Tale of Two Hondas: Two Honda-powered NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers have made their way to the front of the championship battle, courtesy of a victory apiece in the opening trio of races. Reigning and four-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Alex Palou continued his charge from last season by taking victory in the first race of the year, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. He followed that win up with a second-place finish at the inaugural Java House Grand Prix of Arlington. However, the Spaniard lost his title lead for the first time since mid-2024 and sits 26 points adrift of the championship leader. That championship leader is none other than Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood. Kirkwood started the year with a fourth-place at St. Pete, and followed that up with a second place at the NASCAR / IndyCar doubleheader in Phoenix. The Honda-powered Floridian broke through for his first win of the year, and sixth-career NTT INDYCAR SERIES victory, on the streets of Arlington, Texas. He now leads the championship for the first time in his IndyCar career.
  • Tapping into his Power: Will Power made the switch to the Honda-powered Andretti Global team after 17 years with the Penske organization. The two-time series champion and 2018 Indianapolis 500 winner had a rocky start to the season, but broke through with his first podium for Andretti Global last time out at Arlington. Power is a previous two-time winner and four-time pole sitter at Barber Motorsports Park and will be looking to parlay that experience into further success for himself and his Andretti Global teammates to help them get the team's first victory since Ryan Hunter-Reay in 2014 at the 2.38-mile natural-terrain road course.
  • With heavy hearts: IndyCar enters the Barber Motorsports Park weekend on the heels of losing two giants of NTT INDYCAR SERIES events; George Barber and Jim Michaelian. Barber, the founder of Barber Motorsports Park, passed away in February. Barber established Barber Motorsports Park in 2003. In addition to being home to the Children's of Alabama Indy Grand Prix, the facility boasts extensive outdoor art installations and a museum that hosts the world's largest collection of motorcycles—which Barber began collecting in the 1970s. This is the first IndyCar event at the facility since his passing. Michaelian—who passed away this prior weekend—was a founding member of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach and advanced to the role of President and CEO of the event over his 50+ year history with the AGPLB. These two titans will be missed in the racing community.

Honda at Barber Motorsports Park

  • Honda-powered NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers and teams have won six times at Barber Motorsports Park, most recently with Alex Palou last year.
  • Palou won while sporting a Honda Racing Corporation USA livery, claiming the third of his eight wins of the season and the fourth of Honda's ten-consecutive victories to kick off the 2025 season.
  • Four-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves won the inaugural Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber in 2010.
  • Other Honda-powered winners of the event are Alex Palou (2021), Will Power (2011), Ryan Hunter-Reay (2014) and Takuma Sato (2019).
